Welcome to NEPA Pet Fund & Rescue

The NEPA Pet Fund & Rescue is a foster-based, 501(c)(3), non-profit rescue that has saved over 1,400 animals since our inception in 2013! We take local owner surrenders, pull from shelters, and transport southern dogs into our rescue. We make sure we give the best care to each and every animal that we come across by making sure they are up-to-date on all shots, spayed or neutered, and micro-chipped. We make sure all our animals are happy and healthy before we adopt them to their forever homes! We also provide permanent sanctuary to animals who are deemed “un-adoptable” due to their age, medical prognosis, or even the severity of trauma they have suffered.

We require that all dogs/cats (including indoor cats) in the home are current on vaccinations (rabies and distemper vaccines are required for dogs and cats and a bordetella vaccine is strongly recommended for dogs), are currently on heartworm prevention (dogs) and are routinely tested for heartworm disease, are spayed/neutered, and have been seen by a vet for yearly visits.  If you are uncertain about your pet’s status, please contact your vet before proceeding. Applications with pets not meeting these criteria will not be approved.

Below are some statistics people may not be aware of regarding the U.S. Animal Shelters:

Approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those, approximately 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats.  We estimate that the number of dogs and cats entering U.S. shelters annually has declined from approximately 7.2 million in 2011. The biggest decline was in dogs (from 3.9 million to 3.3 million).

Each year, approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized (670,000 dogs and 860,000 cats).  The number of dogs and cats euthanized in U.S. shelters annually has declined from approximately 2.6 million in 2011.  This decline can be partially explained by an increase in the percentage of animals adopted and an increase in the number of stray animals successfully returned to their owners.

According to the ASPCA’s National Rehoming Survey, pet problems are the most common reason that owners rehome their pet, accounting for 47% of rehomed dogs and 42% of rehomed cats.  Pet problems were defined as problematic behaviors, aggressive behaviors, grew larger than expected, or health problems owner couldn’t handle. For more information please go to: ASPCA Pet Statistics

Our Partners

We would like to show appreciation to our veterinary partners that work with us on a daily basis. In the Lackawanna county area, we use Dr. Paws and VCA Dunmore Animal Hospital. They take care of our rescues every day needs as well as spay and neuters. They make appointments for us immediately and our rescues receive excellent care. If you are looking for a veterinarian, we highly recommend them.

If you are looking for a low cost spay and neuter for your dog or cat  please consider using EPAA. We use them also. They get us right in on their schedule and are always so accommodating. We receive the best of care using their services. We are so grateful to have them provide service to us and our rescues.
